OUR STORY

Taipei & Utrecht

We lived in Taipei, now we live in Utrecht. We love both very much, so we created Sao Machine as a way to express our feeling of belonging to more than one place.

We do that through drawings, clothing and comics.

What Sao Machine means

Sao (騷) is a mandarin word to describe someone coquettish, seductive, slutty.

Machine is French slang to describe someone consistently good at something.

Sao Machine is our passion project where we create a world where Taipei meets Utrecht. We hope to share our love for these two cities with those who might not be familiar with one or the other (or both).

How Taipei 101 met the Dom of Utrecht

One evening, William was drawing the Dom tower through a window. Then, to make Jony laugh, he gave the Dom a face, and placed Taipei 101 next to him wearing some cool sunglasses.

That was the joke that started the Sao Machine universe.

We never redrew them. The characters on our clothes and in our comics are that exact sketch — two towers that live almost 10,000 km apart and somehow ended up friends. Taipei met Utrecht, and Sao Machine was born.

How we work

Sao Machine is a personal project to us, so we enjoy keeping as much activity in-house as possible.

We strive to make art and try to put it out there all while respecting the planet.
